As an NYC production company, we’ve seen an array of budgets come through the door. Whether it’s fashion shoots or a normal photoshoot, On Time Elite works with any type of budget. While a $40,000 budget for a shoot can be fun, realistically most editorial budgets are much smaller. Why are editorial budgets for NYC shoots so low? There are a few key reasons.
Passion projects
Most if not all of the editorial projects and editorial budgets we encounter are passion projects. Even though they focus mainly on high-end products there isn’t much funding for them as they are mainly affiliated with print. While it’s an unfortunate sign for the items, print media is declining. So generally the budgets for these shoots reflect that as many times the money just isn’t there. Typically these budgets hover around the $5,000 range. It means a lot of the coordinators have to negotiate with vendors, agents etc to get these projects out of the studio and on the ground.
Not made for advertisement
Usually, an ad campaign has a lot of money behind it because it will reach a large audience who will then most likely contribute to mass buying, so spending a few thousand on a campaign that can generate millions seems like a no-brainer. This isn’t the same for editorial shoots
While shooting in the studio can save a bundle getting outdoors, not to mention using an On Time Elite vehicle would be extremely difficult or not possible at all, that’s because editorial shoots are short-lived print pieces that tell a story, they aren’t really selling you anything, it’s just a story about anything from a new designer to a trend erupting.
Finally, editorial budgets have been notoriously small simply because they don’t stay alive for long, since they are small articles they last anything from one magazine month to two tops.
