Food break! Everybody’s favorite break during the workday. Working on NYC productions full-time, we have been on many different sets. With all types of food catered to the talent, staff, and crew. Catering used to imply tables upon tables of craft service, food easy to pick at, and everyone from any set from film to tv to print would be satiated and ready to take on the day. Now that the pandemic occurred, catering changed how productions in NYC eat entirely.
Small productions
Catering is basically out the window for most small productions now. More often than not productions now require staff members to bring in their own breakfast and lunch. Or they might need to purchase on-site if needed. There is a lot of regulation now about who is allowed to touch the food being served. The people funding these productions often find that it’s more trouble than it’s worth to have a catering company feed the crew with all of the rules and regulations. There are always easy to trim the budget, unfortunately, food is just one of them on a small-time production.
Large productions
Those productions on a larger scale either offer a spending credit for their team members or now pre-order the meals but nothing is like it was. There are no longer trays of food on-site and many times while shooting on location, vehicles such as ours are brought out on-site to serve as a safe and sterile environment in which production team members can enter and sit down safely and enjoy their meals during these long production days.
