A presidential inauguration is a historical event, and we’re thrilled to help with the 2021 edition. The inauguration is an official federal holiday, but it’s much more than that. It’s a day that celebrates our nation’s democracy and the continuity of leadership.
To pull off the celebrations, many organizations and groups of people work together to coordinate amenities, events, and crowd control. We can offer a “backstage” view of the inauguration, something different than you’ll see on the news.
But first, let’s review some inauguration facts:
Who plans the inauguration?
The inauguration is planned by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC). Members of the committee for the 59th Inaugural Ceremonies are Roy Blunt (Missouri), Mitch McConnell (Kentucky), Amy Klobuchar (Minnesota), Nancy Pelosi (California), Steny Hoyer (Maryland), and Kevin McCarthy (California).
The JCCIC plans events such as the swearing-in ceremony, the inaugural address, and the pass in review.
Has the inauguration always taken place in Washington, D.C.?
When George Washington took the oath of office on April 30, 1789, he stood on the balcony of Federal Hall, right here in New York City. His term had started nearly two months before the official inauguration, but that didn’t stop the new nation from celebrating in grand style, with church bells ringing throughout the city, a full procession, and fireworks.

What kinds of events surround inaugurations?
Traditionally, inaugurations have included both formal and less-formal events. For example, since 1953, the JCCIC has hosted a luncheon at the Capitol for the new President, Vice President, and their families and guests.
After the luncheon, the President and Vice President make their way to the East Front steps of the Capitol where they will review military troops before leading a parade of military regiments, citizens’ groups, marching bands, and floats down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House.
How will COVID affect this year’s inauguration?
Typically, concerts, balls, and dinners are held around town in association with the inauguration. Because of COVID-19, these events will probably be smaller and fewer in number than usual.
In fact, on Jan. 11, D.C. Mayor Bowser issued Mayor’s Order 2021-004 to extend a pause of various activities in the District until Friday, Jan. 22, 2021 at 5 a.m., including indoor dining and museums. The Mayor strongly encourages people to be cautious and limit their exposure to others so as to reduce the spread of the virus.
