“Where’s your permit?”
Those are the last words you want to hear on the day of your shoot–unless, of course, all of your permits are in order. With your permits all taken care of, you can focus on the real work at hand, the creative work you’re really good at.
Getting the proper permits well ahead of your shoot can save you all kinds of headaches, such as delays and fines. We want your shoot to be as successful as possible, and that’s why we’ve put together a blog post dedicated to the permitting process for film and photo shoots in Manhattan.
You may not need all of the following permits for your upcoming shoot. Read through the different types of permits and find out which ones are applicable to your project.
Street Photography and Film Permit
The Office of Film, Theatre, and Broadcasting offers permits to productions filming in public spaces in New York City. Permits are only required if the production requires parking privileges for production vehicles, needs exclusive access to City property, will be using prop weapons or prop vehicles, or will have actors dressed in police uniforms or executing stunts. You’ll need to show proof of liability insurance in order to secure one of these permits.
Some productions choose to obtain an optional permit for the benefits gained through the permit. These benefits include free police assistance, free parking, and free access to most exterior locations. You don’t need to show proof of insurance for an optional permit. Create an account here to get started on your permit online.
Public Park Permit
If you plan on shooting in a park, you’ll need to secure a public park permit. Start by filling out the general online form, but don’t stop there. You’ll also need to contact the park director for the park you’re interested in using. Keep in mind that each park has a different director.
Battery Park
Battery Park now has ePermits, which you can apply for online. You can also find an event planning guide on the website, which includes helpful information for your shoot.
Brooklyn Bridge Park
The Brooklyn Bridge Park is not currently issuing permits for weekend days, and it requires insurance for shoots. Drones are not allowed at the park. Online permitting is available.
Bryant Park
You’ll need to fill in the pdf permit application and email it to park administration. Keep in mind that the park borders the New York Public Library, but if you wish to shoot on the library steps or include the library’s facade in your images, you’ll need a separate permit from the library.
Central Park
Central Park receives thousands of permit requests each year for film and photography shoots, so get your application in early. You can use the online form or email a copy of the pdf. The park doesn’t charge for use, but it does appreciate donations for conservancy efforts.
Hudson River Park
If you plan to shoot at Hudson River Park, keep in mind that you can’t restrict public access to any part of the park or block foot traffic. Complete the online application, and give yourself at least 10 business days for a response.
Prospect Park
Depending on the complexity of your project, you may need to hold a meeting with the Prospect Park Alliance regarding your project. Therefore, start early, and be thorough with your permit.
Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) Permits
Any vehicle over 33 feet in length needs a permit in New York. It’s important to contact the motorhome company regarding your permit because there will probably be specific questions about the vehicle. We’re happy to help you with any information D.O.T. needs about our fleet of location trailers and production vehicles.
Private Township Photography/Film Permits
If you’re interested in filming or photographing in a township, contact the city hall and inquire about the proper permits and document requirements. In most cases, you’ll also need fire department and police department authorization before you receive your permit. After securing fire and police permission, go back to the city and pay the fee to get your permit. The turnaround for this type of permit will vary from township to township, so start the process early. See the requirements for Film/Photography permits for East Hampton here for an example.
